Fire Controlman First Class (Surface Warfare) Walker, Michael E., entered Recruit Training Command on 09 July 1990, just one month and 7 days after graduating from Hillcrest High School in Midvale, Utah. His naval career spanned 22 years, 10 months, and 22 days, filled with harrowing, fun, and exciting experiences both at home and abroad.
The first seven years of his service were as a Boatswain’s Mate aboard three ships: the USS Lynde McCormick (DDG-8), USS Lewis B. Puller (FFG-23), and the USS Oriole (MHC-55). Following this, he attended Fire Control Class “A” and “C” schools and spent the remainder of his career as a Fire Controlman. Rising through the ranks from Third Class Petty Officer to First Class Petty Officer, FC1 Walker served aboard four more ships: the USS Kearsarge (LHD-3), USS Gonzalez (DDG-66), USS Laboon (DDG-57), and USS Mitscher (DDG-58), as well as at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth.
While serving aboard the USS Laboon, FC1 Walker volunteered for a one-year “Boots on Ground” assignment as an Electronic Warfare Officer embedded with the 25th Infantry Division in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2008 to 2009.
During his time in the Navy, FC1 Walker pursued distance learning courses as a student of Liberty University. After retirement, he returned to his family home in Cleveland, Texas, where he enrolled at Sam Houston State University before transferring to Grace School of Theology.
FC1 Walker currently resides in Cleveland, Texas, with his loving wife Rebecca, whom he affectionately refers to as COMNAVCIVGULF, and their three dogs. Together, they have seven grown children, all of whom have established careers, and their family has been blessed with 11 grandchildren.
Petty Officer Walker believes in living each day so that “the preacher won’t have to lie when he dies.” He remains committed to living out the Navy’s Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, with a focus on integrity. He is actively involved in his church and community, where he enjoys leading worship and Bible studies.
